HIPEC for peritoneal metastases

The peritoneum is the inner lining of the abdomen, a place where stomach cancer cells often spread and nestle. Until recently we did not have an effective treatment for this patient group and the prospects were not good. But thanks to HIPEC treatment, this patient group has a new treatment option available. The treatment results as seen in Asia are positive. HIPEC is a treatment in which the abdominal cavity is irrigated using chemotherapy to kill all remaining cancer cells after the visible metastases are removed. the HIPEC treatment is used in combination with the removal of the stomach cancer itself. The PERISCOPE-II trial investigates whether HIPEC offers a better survival rate compared to the current standard treatment using chemotherapy.
