Nuno Leitão Figueiredo, MD, PhD
Nuno Figueiredo has been Head of the Champalimaud Surgical Centre since it opened in 2015, as well as continuing his role as a colorectal surgeon. He began his career in earnest as a member of the Kidney Transplant Team at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon, after studying for his Medical Degree and PhD at Lisbon University, and becoming a Lecturer of Surgery at the same institution. Following his Fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery, which he undertook in Belgium, and a one-year position as Honorary Consultant Surgeon in the Minimally Invasive Colorectal Unit of Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth (where he obtained the certification of Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgeon in accordance with National Training Standards UK), he became a certified robotic surgeon in December 2015 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in March 2017.
In 2013, Nuno Figueiredo won the Pfizer Award for Fundamental Research and he has continued this interest in research with several projects, including: the International Watch & Wait Database (www.iwwd.org), personalised colorectal cancer therapy using novel patient-derived xenografts in zebrafish, tumour response to neo-adjuvant treatment, and robotic and minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
