Michiel Hogenboom
Where the Sun hits the Sky
Michiel Hogenboom was commissioned by the art committee of the Netherlands Cancer Institute to make a new series of monumental paintings. Fishermen showing their catch in flaming blues. The sources of inspiration for the series are amateur photos of anglers and spearfishers; the trophy shots of Ernest Hemingway and classical paintings of pietas (Mary with Christ after the Descent from the Cross).
Michiel Hogenboom about the work:
"In a mixture of testosterone and tenderness, the anglers and harpoon fishermen show each other their slippery catch. Painting these trophy hunters gives me a huge kick. The fishermen are archetypes, searching souls, their bravado and fighting spirit transcend time. They depict our passion, happiness, dark dreams and existential fears."
