Camp

The Dutch photographer Albert van Westing portrays people in everyday actions. His works have titles such as: 'Eating, drinking, sleeping' (1994), 'Shaving' (1995), 'Making tea' (1999), 'Telephoning' (2003), 'Brushing teeth' (2015) and Cutting bread (2018).

In the work 'Camp' from 2000 we see a group of young people during a holiday camp. The image raises questions; The people seem to be hanging around and not doing much. What are we looking at; it seems to ask us. Van Westing about his work: "The surrender to an action that is carried out in peace is one of the main themes of my work: the attention with which you do the dishes, read a newspaper, or love someone. It goes hand in hand with intimacy." For van Westing, calm in looking is central. It emphasizes intimacy and time and offers contemplation.
