'The Mounted Life' (2005 -2011) is a series of photographs that Van Ark made in the storage rooms of more than thirty different Natural History Museums in Europe and the United States. Photographed with a 4 x 5 inch camera, natural light and long exposures, the stuffed animals were captured in the way van Ark found them.

Van Ark: "I was interested in the environment and the setting that had been unintentionally created by the museum staff. Often emotional, funny or sad at the same time".
