Erik Mattijssen

Song of life

Erik Mattijssen made this work for the central hall on behalf of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital. The work consists of eleven separate parts, which form a whole when framed. The work represents an interior space that is not quite right, composed as a collage in which meaningful elements are incorporated. Just as you reconstruct places from memories in your mind. The center of the work is a tree of life that rises above the everyday. The table is intersected and the two chairs suggest the presence of two people. They are no longer together, but in the tree they are forever connected. The work is a tribute to a generous family whose unfinished togetherness has not led to bitterness, but to the realization that there must be and remain room for optimism and zest for life.
