James Beckett
Transcriptions 1-6

James Beckett was commissioned by the NKI-AVL to make an installation for the stairwell of the research centre of the NKI. The transcriptions displayed on 6 floors of the stairwell are a translation of the genetic information of fish. For this work, Beckett was inspired by historical languages that consist of old and sometimes outdated systems for storing and communicating with information.
In the work we see a successive systematic representation of objects and parts of (old) utensils. The objects that Beckett uses for this are commonplace; a tie or parts of car lights. In doing so, the artist emphasizes the relationship between daily life and the high-quality research that is conducted at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
