Landscape in White

Landscape in White is a recent commission from the Netherlands Cancer Institute to the artist. Jenny Ymker herself is the model for all her works. We often see her as a character in a desolate landscape. Thrown back on himself, on his way to an unknown destination. Ymkers' works evoke a melancholic, subdued and sometimes slightly absurdist atmosphere.

'Landscape in White' was realized in 2020 on behalf of the art committee of the Netherlands Cancer Institute. The art committee chose this work because of its modest appearance and symbolic meaning. Jenny Ymker about this: "Landscape in White" shows a winter landscape. But after winter comes spring and summer. The events in our lives also have these seasons. The person in the work walks on a sturdy rope in good spirits and confidence. I want to show that confidence and courage with this tapestry. I hope that all the people who come here will recognize themselves in this."

Escape

This tapestry was commissioned by the Muiderslot for the exhibition "Armed with beauty, women and power since the Middle Ages".

In the Middle Ages, falconry for women of high birth was extremely suitable to escape embroidery or walking in style. The feeling of freedom, which was associated with falconry for these women, was taken by Jenny Ymker as a starting point. The woman in the work Escape has five falcons in her hand that fly in all directions. The woman is not pulled aside by the birds but stays in her own place. For Ymker, this image stands for freedom and strength.
