Blue wall reliefs

The series of nine wall reliefs were commissioned by Marthe Röling for the construction of the research laboratory of the Netherlands Cancer Institute in 1978. They symbolize the scientific work of the various research groups such as biochemistry, biology, virology and immunology. Portraits of the artist have been incorporated into the reliefs. They symbolize the human being who is central to research at the cellular level.

Portrait of Anton Berns
Anton Berns was scientific director and chairman of the board of directors of the NKI from 1999 to 2011. He started his research lab at the NKI in 1986. Berns' research group used mouse models to better understand the mechanisms of cancer progression with the aim of developing methods to cure. He made very important scientific contributions to the development of the study of cancer; Many of the models he developed are still in use today.
