Theo van den Boogaard

Antoni's Orchestra

Antoni's Orchestra was commissioned by the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek for the staff building. Because it can be seen almost exclusively by the staff, it has a different function than if it had been made for the public building. Van den Boogaard: "Before the assignment, I was in great uncertainty about how figuratively I could meet this. Did I have to draw the AVL buildings from the outside? The waiting rooms, the treatment rooms, the operating rooms, the rooms with beds? That would be a bit boring and unimaginative. I wanted to approach the work of the staff in terms of content and not just make wall decorations. The idea arose through an extensive intake among staff from different work disciplines. I am very happy with the metaphor of an orchestra led by a conductor for the cooperation that exists between all the working disciplines of the hospital. The cheerfulness of the dance indicates that one can also enjoy the work. I hope that the viewer immediately feels how much appreciation I have for the important work that the staff, in all disciplines, does."

Theo van den Boogaard is a well-known Dutch cartoonist. In the seventies he broke through as an underground cartoonist and later with the comic Sjef van Oekel which is based on the TV character of the same name, written by Wim T. Schippers.
