Thomas Elshuis

Leave it to memory and Light Up

Thomas Elshuis is fascinated by photography as a means of documenting our travels. He is not concerned with the locations themselves, but with the meaning that the images can have when he returns home. Elshuis himself does not travel for work, nor does he take new photos. He uses existing travel photos from an image archive of more than 20,000 slides that he inherited in 1998. This is his source of inspiration for stories; All his work stems from this archive.

The artist makes new constructions from the existing photographic material. From the old material comes something new as our memories appear; elusive and looming out of nowhere.
