Michiel van der Heijden

Since 2013 I have been working as an internist-oncologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Before this, I completed my training as an internist-oncologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and worked here as a researcher. I treat patients with various forms of cancer, with a focus on urological tumors. The warm, personal approach to patients and the dedication of the people who work here make the Netherlands Cancer Institute a stimulating place to do the very best for patients with cancer.

Scientific research has improved the treatment of bladder cancer in recent years. Immunotherapy is effective in some patients and can sometimes bring the disease under control for a long time. The research I do focuses on improving immunotherapy by looking for the causes why this treatment sometimes does not work well. This work should lead to better treatment that is more focused on the individual.
