Johanna van Sandick

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) I combine direct patient care with scientific research.
The patients I treat have lung cancer, esophageal cancer or stomach cancer. For every patient, it is a challenge to coordinate the operation as closely as possible with the rest of the treatment. In my research activities, I mainly focus on the treatment of esophageal and gastric carcinoma.

I am also chairman of the multidisciplinary Gastroenterology and Liver Tumor Working Group. In this working group, quality of care in the entire care chain of patients with a gastrointestinal malignancy has the highest priority.

Outside the hospital, I am chairman of the Dutch Upper GI Cancer Audit (DUCA) and of the Dutch Gastric Cancer Group (DGCG). The national audit data can be used to define improvement processes in healthcare, and the DGCG is mainly there to coordinate national gastric cancer studies.
