Melianthe Nicolai

Since 2020 I have been working as a urologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. My focus is on improving the quality of life for people who are or have been treated for cancer. I mainly focus on improving sexual functions and restoring intimacy in relationships. I also treat male sex hormone problems and fertility problems.

In order to be able to help people with the sexual problems that arise as a result of being ill and oncological treatments, I provide the weekly consultation hour 'sexuality after cancer'. And to improve the quality of care for sexuality and intimacy within oncology, I also conduct scientific research in this area.

I obtained my PhD in 2014, my dissertation was about erectile dysfunction in cardiovascular disease. After that, I worked a lot on studies aimed at mapping and improving care for sexual health within various medical specialties.

At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, my research is now mainly focused on determining the best ways to restore erections after prostate cancer surgery.

I was trained as a urologist at the Leiden University Medical Center. At the Sint Antonius Hospital I further specialized in andrology and medical sexology.
