Jan Pater
Aurora
Aurora is located in the central hall between the old and new buildings of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. In Pater's view, the imposing sculpture of Carara marble depicts an optimistic attitude to life because it is directed upwards. The black background makes the sculpture appear even longer. Aurora means sunrise, dawn. The artist wanted to create an optimistic image from which you can derive strength. It is powerful, but it has soft aspects. It can offer security and soften the environment.
Aurora is made in Italy. For almost twenty years, Pater has been working part of the year at Studio Sem in Pietrasanta near Carrara, Italy. The rough stone from which Aurora is made is carved out of the mountains there. Just like Michelangelo's stones. Before the stone was processed, it weighed 21 tons. Aurora now 'only' three tons.
