Intensive Care

Our Intensive Care (IC) is specialized in oncology. We treat patients who need to be monitored at all times. Every year, we treat 700 patients at the IC. Approximately 70% of patients come to the IC after their surgery. This often concerns major surgery so our patients are aware of their stay at the IC before they come in for their operation.

If you are scheduled for surgery and know that you will have to spend time at the IC to recover, you can come to visit the department on the afternoon before your surgery. This will give you an impression of the environment you will be in when recovering from surgery.

What can we do for you?

  • All patients at the IC need complex medical care. The vital functions are monitored at all times and will be supported if needed.
  • A stay at the Intensive Care can be quite drastic. Support for you and your loved ones is part of our work.
  • All our patients are discussed during a multidisciplinary team meeting every day during which our intensivist, IC nurse, surgeons, oncologist, pharmacist, and clinical microbiologist will consider your treatment. If necessary, other involved parties are invited to join.

Special focus

All patients on the IC after surgery came from different departments: surgery, head and neck oncology, urology, gynecology, radiology, or plastic surgery. The palette of surgical procedures is diverse, encompassing patients undergoing a HIPEC procedure, esophageal or stomach surgery, rectal surgery, lung surgery, cystectomies, or commando resections.

These stays at the IC are usually planned. These patients know that they will have to spend some time at the Intensive Care after their surgery. A small number of patients will be readmitted due to complications or fall ill on their wards, requiring a stay at the Intensive Care. Non-surgical admissions usually concern patients receiving treatment in medical oncology or thoracic oncology.

Because the entire Anesthesiology and Intensive Care department specializes in oncological care, before, during, and after surgery, our patients receive the treatment that best fits their illness, in terms of oncology and Intensive Care.

Our team

Our team consists of IC nurses, anesthesiologists intensivists, and anesthesiologists, Medium Care nurses, IC nurses in training, and department assistants. An intensivist is present on weekdays, exclusively for the IC, and we have a 24/7 back watch system available during work hours.
