Shirley Bouman
After my training in Toronto, I started working at the NKI in 2009 as a Prosthodontist. We work in a team of two ladies, in which I am mainly responsible for the design of the ears, noses and eyes in wax and my colleague Anique for the silicone work. Within the Head and Neck department, the various specialisms are well attuned to each other and we work closely together, which works very well.
Our patients are mainly people who have been diagnosed with facial cancer. But we also see people whose ear is not fully grown or who have had an accident.
Many of our patients have had a difficult time. It is very nice that we can help these people a little bit with a prosthesis in the hope that they can leave that difficult time behind them somewhat. For more information, see Facial prothetics in the Netherlands Cancer Institute.
