3D navigation system for liver surgery

During complex abdominal surgery, it is vital to fully remove the tumor while keeping the surrounding vital structures in-tact. To assist the surgeon in this task, the Netherlands Cancer Institute has been developing a surgical navigation system over the past years. This truly unique system works similar to navigation systems that can be used in the car. The surgeon can view the tumor on a 3D map of the body, as well as the vital structures. This system is currently used in liver surgery as part of a trial.
