Chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity

Chemotherapy can be delivered in several ways. The standard delivery is by IV, but another way is by delivering the chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity. This method of chemotherapy is called intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or IP therapy.  The treatment will be delivered directly after surgery with heated chemotherapy (HIPEC) or after surgery by delivering the chemotherapy through a small tube inserted into the abdomen during several sessions. As of March 1, 2019, HIPEC treatment is available for patients with ovarian cancer in ten hospitals in the Netherlands: the Amsterdam UMC, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Catharina Hospital, Erasmus MC, LUMC, MS Twente, Maastricht UMC+, Radboud MC, UMC Groningen, and UMC Utrecht.
