Chemoradiation for advanced penile carcinoma
Until recently, patients with locally advanced penile carcinomas received chemotherapy before surgery, followed by radiation treatment. This is an intensive treatment with disappointing results.
In tumor types similar to penile carcinoma, chemoradiation has proven effective. Chemoradiation is a combination of radiotherapy and simultaneous low-dose chemotherapy which should amplify the effects of the radiation treatment.
The Netherlands Cancer Institute is currently investigating whether this treatment type is effective for advanced penile carcinoma. The Netherlands Cancer Institute is currently the only hospital offering chemoradiation.
