NKI Lung Cancer Center

What can you expect?

First appointment

Your doctor has referred you to the NKI lung cancer centre. The diagnosis may already be clear, or your doctor may want to have you examined for a suspicious abnormality. During your first appointment, you will have a conversation with the medical specialist. This will map out your current symptoms and medical history. You will also have a physical examination. This results in global findings that usually require further research.

Research

If further testing is needed, we will schedule follow-up appointments for additional diagnostic tests.

Team meeting

When all examinations have been carried out and you have been well informed about the possibilities, we will discuss your final treatment in a multidisciplinary consultation. Of course in close consultation with you as a patient.

Conversation treatment plan

Once all the results of the diagnostic tests are known, you and your doctor will decide how your tumour will be treated.

Treatment

You will then start your treatment.

Aftercare

Of course, we schedule appointments after your treatment to keep a close eye on the follow-up. There is also extra help for your daily life within the Quality of Life Centre.

  • Multidisciplinary

Our practitioners work together in multidisciplinary teams. As a result, you will be treated with the knowledge of pulmonologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and nurse specialists – all experts in oncological care. We offer you medical quality, but also personal attention, short waiting times and clear communication.

  • Care and research

We combine care with scientific research. You will receive treatment according to the latest insights and guidelines, and you will receive the latest treatments such as immunotherapy and targeted therapies. You can also sometimes participate in a study. You will then receive treatment that is not yet available elsewhere. In this way, we help you and work on better care worldwide.

  • A team of experts

Our specialists specialize in lung cancer. Your situation, results and medical details will be discussed in a multidisciplinary meeting. The team of experts will work together to find the best treatment plan for you. With us, you are an equal discussion partner and you help decide on your treatment.

  • More than just medical care

We not only provide the best possible care, but also support you in other ways. Think of physiotherapy to get or stay fit, or psychological counseling with the mental side of the disease. We see you as a human being, not just as a patient.

  • Innovation

The Netherlands Cancer Institute is at the forefront of technological innovation. We use the latest forms of radiation that work very precisely. Sometimes surgery is no longer necessary. For complex operations, we use the Da Vinci surgical robot. This allows us to work very precisely, and that helps us to recover faster.

Trials

In addition to being a hospital, the Netherlands Cancer Institute is also a renowned research institute in the field of cancer. Every day, 700 passionate researchers work on a better understanding of cancer and how we can cure it.

We also do many scientific studies (trials) for lung cancer. If you are being treated at the NKI Lung Cancer Centre, there is a good chance that we will ask you to participate in such a study.

We are learning more and more about how tumors work. This knowledge helps us to make the treatments better. Research into the hereditary characteristics of the tumor plays an important role in this.

Sometimes you will receive a treatment that is still being investigated. Then we test new medicines or other treatments that seem to work well, for example.

By participating in clinical research, you also help to create a better future for patients. Sometimes you also get earlier access to a new treatment that is not yet available everywhere.

Always discuss with your doctor whether you want to participate in research. This way you know what is possible and what it means for you.
