I was trained as a urologist at the RadboudUMC in Nijmegen. Prior to my training as a urologist, I conducted research into the treatment of patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma, after which I obtained my PhD in 2009. The implementation of hyperthermic intravesical chemotherapy (HIVEC or thermochemotherapy or heated chemotherapy bladder lavage) at the Netherlands Cancer Institute is a result of this. It was also here that the foundation was laid early on for my further interest in oncological urology. I have been working at the Netherlands Cancer Institute since 2014, the first year as a fellow in oncological urology, then as a staff member.

Our entire urology team is continuously evaluating and improving the care of patients with bladder, prostate, upper urinary tract (renal pelvis or pyelum, and ureter or ureter), urethral (urethra), testicular (testis), penile and urachus cancer. Each urologist in our team has further specialized in one or more of these urological cancers, both clinically and scientifically.

With great enthusiasm, I am part of the multidisciplinary focus group on bladder, upper urinary tract, urethra and urachus cancer at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. For patients with one of these conditions, we have a weekly rapid diagnostics clinic, after which a multidisciplinary consultation (MDO) takes place. A urologist, nurse specialist, internist-oncologist, radiotherapist, radiologist, nuclear medicine physician and pathologist are always present; if necessary, also plastic surgeon and colon surgeon. Several of these urological tumors are rare, requiring a unique approach, with tailored advice. We act according to the most recent insights and developments, and we want to actively contribute to those developments ourselves. This may mean that we ask you to participate in scientific research, initiated by us, or as part of a larger and often international collaboration.
