Oscar Brouwer

My career at the Netherlands Cancer Institute actually started in 2009, as a doctor in the nursing ward. During my subsequent PhD research into new imaging techniques during surgery, my love for urology was born. After urology training in Groningen, Leiden and The Hague, I returned as a urologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in January 2019. My particular areas of interest are the rare urological cancers: penile cancer and testicular cancer.

It is with great pleasure and pride that I lead the multidisciplinary penile cancer focus group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, the only nationally recognized center of expertise for penile cancer. The Netherlands Cancer Institute is also part of a network of European centres of expertise in which I represent the hospital in the field of penile cancer. In this way, we disseminate our knowledge in the rest of Europe and stay abreast of the latest developments. I am also chairman of the European-American guidelines committee for penile cancer.

The penile cancer focus group consists not only of urologists, but also of penile cancer specialists in radiotherapy, oncology, plastic surgery, radiology, nuclear medicine, and pathology. Patients can visit our rapid diagnostics penile cancer outpatient clinic every week, and together we have a multidisciplinary consultation (MDO) every week. This ensures that every patient receives tailor-made care, where all treatment options are considered and can then all be offered at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. As a centre of expertise, we also pay attention to the quality of life after the (often drastic for the patient) treatment. To this end, we work together with our quality for life centre and with the patient platform 'rare cancers'.

Oncological care at an academic level, but with short lines of communication and always focused on patient, quality improvement, and innovation; that is why I see the Netherlands Cancer Institute as the ideal place to contribute to this, both clinically and scientifically.
