Active Surveillance for prostate cancer

Active surveillance is a treatment option for people with prostate cancer that has not spread through the body, who have a low risk of metastases, and whose PSA levels are below a certain threshold. This means that the treatment is available for men with only a limited number (1 or 2) of tissue biopsies that tested positive for tumor cells, with a Gleason score of 6 and a PSA equal to or lower than 10.

Active surveillance means that we regularly check your PSA levels and monitor your tumor using an MRI scan to make sure it doesn’t grow. If needed, we can take and analyze a small prostate tissue sample (biopsy). Our experience has shown that 66% of prostate cancer patients under active surveillance do not experience tumor growth. 33% of patients will eventually require more active treatment.
