What can you expect?
First appointment
Your doctor has referred you to the NKI Sarcomas and GISTcentrum. The diagnosis may already be clear, or your doctor may want to have you examined for a suspicious abnormality. During your first appointment, you will have a conversation with the surgeon and his assistant. This will map out your current symptoms and medical history. A physical examination will also take place. This results in global findings that usually require further investigation.
Research
If more testing is needed, we will schedule follow-up appointments for additional diagnostic tests.
Team meeting
When all the results of the diagnostic tests are known, your situation will be discussed in a multidisciplinary consultation. This is a consultation with a group of specialists who specialize in sarcomas and GIST. They will discuss which treatment is best for you.
Conversation treatment plan
The doctor will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will decide together how you will be treated. At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, we think it is important that you have a say in your treatment. You are an equal discussion partner for us.
Treatment
After this, your treatment will start.
On average, our patients are treated within the following number of days after determining the treatment plan:
- Treatment with medication: <14 days
- Surgical treatment: 21-42 days*
- Radiotherapy treatment: <14 days
*if no pre-treatment is required
Aftercare
Of course, we schedule appointments after your treatment to keep a close eye on the follow-up. There is also a lot of attention for supportive care within the Quality of Life Center.
Why choose the AVL Sarcomas and GISTcentrum?
-
Expertise
Soft tissue tumors are rare and occur in many different places in the body. They can also behave very differently and do not all react the same to treatment.
That is why it is important that people with a sarcoma are treated in an expertise center, such as the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Especially in the case of high-risk sarcomas, we increasingly see that treatment in such a center ensures better survival.
