NKI Esophageal and Stomach Cancer Center
What can you expect?
First appointment
Your doctor has referred you to the NKI Stomach and Esophageal Cancer Centre. The diagnosis may already be clear, or your doctor may want to have you examined for a suspicious abnormality. During your first appointment, you will have a conversation with the medical specialist or nurse specialist. This will map out your current symptoms and medical history.
Research
When further testing is needed, we schedule follow-up appointments for additional diagnostic tests.
Team meeting
When all the examinations have been carried out, we discuss the treatment options in a multidisciplinary meeting.
Conversation treatment plan
After the multidisciplinary consultation, the nurse specialist and/or medical specialist will discuss the treatment options with you and you will decide together what the final treatment will be.
Treatment
You will then start your treatment, if desired.
On average, our patients are treated within the following number of days:
- Surgical treatment: <14 days*
- Treatment with medication: <14 days
- Radiotherapy treatment: <14 days
*On average, treatment is started within two weeks after the first outpatient visit. The waiting time may be longer for surgical treatment, because there is a pre-treatment attached to the operation. Pre-treatment therefore takes place during this period.
Aftercare
Of course, we schedule appointments after your treatment to keep a close eye on the follow-up. There is also extra help for your daily life within the Quality of Life Centre.
