Art at the NKI

'Pleasant for the eyes' is the motto of the art committee of the NKI. With this, the committee wants to indicate that the art that is exhibited counterbalances the less pleasant aspects that for most patients and visitors are simply associated with a visit to the NKI. Art offers the opportunity for a look outside. This places demands on the works of art that are exhibited. Pleasant, open and no association with cancer, without the works becoming superficial or losing quality. Art is also a resting point or distraction from daily work for employees.

In the vision of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, art is part of the objective that the hospital wants to propagate. The quality of life is central in a patient-oriented hospital such as the NKI. Art gives the hospital a friendly and welcome appearance that makes patients and also the employees feel at ease. The building and the spaces are given their own identity and thus become recognizable.

A large part of the art collection is exhibited in the publicly accessible part of the building. Another part of the collection hangs in semi-publicly accessible locations, such as the auditorium and staff restaurant Tiffany's and within organizational units that are only accessible to employees.
