NKI Prostate Cancer Center
With us you have access to the latest treatment methods and techniques, such as operations with the Da Vinci Robot. This allows us to treat you with maximum precision and preserve your quality of life as much as possible.
For the irradiation of the prostate we use the MR-Linac method. This is an accurate method of radiation therapy in which we can continuously visualize the position of the tumor and the tissues around it during treatment. Together with you, we choose the treatment that best suits your life and wishes.
In addition to medical care, we also offer extensive support in the Quality of Life Center. For example, in the field of physiotherapy, psychological counseling, sexology, dietetics and rehabilitation.
The NKI is constantly conducting scientific research to further improve care. Through our collaboration with other hospitals within the Prostate Cancer Network and our commitment to scientific research, we continue to work on the best possible prostate cancer care.
What can you expect?
First appointment
Your doctor has referred you to the NKI Prostate Cancer Centre. The diagnosis may already be clear, or your doctor may want to have you examined for a suspicious abnormality. During your first appointment, you will have a conversation with the surgeon and his assistant. This will map out your current symptoms and medical history. A physical examination will also take place. This results in global findings that usually require more research.
Research
If more testing is needed, we will schedule follow-up appointments for additional diagnostic tests.
Team meeting
When all the results of the diagnostic tests are known, your situation will be discussed in a multidisciplinary consultation. This is a consultation with a group of specialists who all specialize in prostate cancer. They will discuss which treatment is best for you.
Conversation treatment plan
The doctor will discuss the treatment plan with you. You will decide together how you will be treated. At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, we think it is important that you have a say in your treatment. You are an equal discussion partner for us.
Treatment
After this, your treatment will start. On average , our patients are treated within the following number of days:
- Radiotherapy treatment: <22 days
- Surgical treatment: 28-60 days
- Treatment with medication: <21 days
Aftercare
Of course, we schedule appointments after your treatment to keep a close eye on the follow-up. There is also a lot of attention for supportive care within the Quality of Life Center.

Trials
In addition to being a hospital, the Netherlands Cancer Institute is also a renowned research institute in the field of cancer. Every day, 700 enthusiastic researchers are committed to better understanding how cancer develops and how we can cure it. We also carry out many scientific studies (trials) for prostate cancer. If a study is suitable for you, the attending physician will discuss this with you.
