NKI Breast Cancer Center
Why the NKI Breast Cancer Center?
You can contact us for all breast cancer care. For example, we offer rapid diagnostics in the event of a suspected breast cancer at the NKI Center for Early Diagnostics. Here we see women every day with complaints such as a lump. We also see women who have been referred for further testing by the breast cancer screening.
We are also here for advanced personalized systemic treatment, surgical and plastic surgery procedures, and radiation. After the treatment, we will help you with aftercare, psychosocial counselling and rehabilitation. Our multidisciplinary team of medical specialists, nurse specialists, physician assistants, nurses, radiotherapists, nuclear medicine physicians, psychologists, social workers, doctor's assistants and researchers combine their knowledge and expertise on a daily basis and are fully committed to providing every patient with the best treatment and quality of life.
In addition to tailor-made breast cancer treatment, we also pay a lot of attention to the early detection of breast cancer in women with an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Women with an increased risk are seen at the Screening Clinic of the NKI Center for Early Diagnostics. At the Screening Clinic you will receive extensive information and advice based on the latest insights tailored to your specific situation. Prior to the periodic check-up, each woman is discussed in a multidisciplinary consultation (MDO). All specialists involved in the Screening Clinic are present in this meeting. Where necessary, we also discuss the possibilities of preventive surgery in this care process.
What can you expect?
First appointment
Have you been diagnosed with breast cancer in another hospital? You can contact us for a second opinion in the short term. You can also have (further) treatment with us.
You will be at the rapid diagnostics/second opinion clinic for this. This means that you will first have an interview and physical examination with the surgeon or nurse specialist. All the radiological examinations previously done will be reviewed and analysed. Additional radiological examinations and tissue examinations are carried out on the same day if necessary.
All patients who come for a second opinion are discussed in our multidisciplinary consultation in which all breast cancer specialists are involved.
You will receive complete tailor-made advice. In most cases, we can give you our treatment advice the same day.
Additional research
If you want to be treated with us and additional tests are needed, we will make follow-up appointments for additional diagnostic tests.
Treatment
After that, your treatment will begin.
On average, you will be treated within:
- Radiotherapy treatment: <14 days
- Surgery (with reconstruction): <56 days
- Surgery (without reconstruction): <32 days
- Treatment with medication: <14 days
Aftercare
After your treatment, you will remain under our supervision. There is also a lot of attention for supportive care, you can contact us for extra help at the Center for Quality of Life.

The treatment team
Our specialists are all fully specialized in breast cancer. In a team of different specialists, during a so-called multidisciplinary consultation, your situation is discussed on the basis of your results and medical data and it is determined which treatment is best for you. Your own doctor will then discuss this plan with you. At the Netherlands Cancer Institute, we see you as an equal discussion partner and you help decide on your own treatment.
